Footsteps of the Maasai

Kili and MaasaiTrek with the Maasai and visit an AMREF project


This trek gives a wonderful insight into the lives and customs of one of Africa’s most famous nomadic tribes, the Maasai.

Beginning in the foothills of Mount Longdio, a sacred Maasai mountain, you will cross the beautiful Great Rift Valley with the Maasai as your guides.

Groups of ten or more will also have the opportunity to visit an AMREF project to see the work that their money and effort is supporting.

Challenge Summary

Day 1 Depart UK to Nairobi, Kenya
Day 2 Drive to Tanzania & trek to Longido. Camp
Day 3 Longido to Kitumbeine. Camp
Day 4 Kitumbeine Mountain & village. Camp
Day 5 Across Dustpans of Nagarirat to Gelai. Camp
Day 6 Sunken Crater & the Lava Plains. Camp
Day 7 Transfer to Engaruka. Camp
Day 8 Ngorongoro Crater. Lodge
Day 9 Back to Arusha, Depart Arusha to UK
Day 10 Arrive UK

As the trek progresses and you climb to the higher slopes of Mount Kitumbeine, you will have the chance to visit remote Maasai settlements. The final day of the trek will include a safari and game drive to one of the Natural Wonders of the World, the beautiful Ngorongoro Crater. Combining your challenge with a visit to an AMREF project will give you a unique insight into AMREF’s work improving health across east Africa.

AMREF Project Visit

For larger groups AMREF can arrange a project visit to coincide with your trip. Just get in touch and we’ll see what we can do! Following such an interesting and challenging trek with a visit to an AMREF project is to complete a quite wonderful experience; it is truly amazing to see for yourself what your sponsorship money is helping to achieve. (Please note that the AMREF project visit will add up to two days onto the end of the itinerary above).
